Course Overview
1st CPR is proud to present a particularly unique program – Band Aid – a fun and exciting educational experience for Grade 3, 4 and 5 students.
We at 1st CPR have a collectively spent 20 years in the Emergency Services, and we have seen a great need for children, as young 8 years old, to be taught the very basics of First Aid as well the principles of dealing with an emergency situation.
When one considers the vast number of children who are left with nannies or older siblings (and some even on their own) while their parents are working, we feel it is of utmost importance to equip these children with the basic tools to be able to help themselves and those around them in an emergency. These are life skills which will stand them in good stead in various areas of life, whether at school, on the sports field, on the road with mom and dad, or simply at home.
The Band Aid program has been specifically formulated for children, and it covers a variety of important topics at an age appropriate (ages 8 – 11) level. The program is highly interactive, and the children encouraged to be hands on and practice the different techniques and skills together with the instructors.
Course Outline
- The Call for Help – WHO to call and WHAT to tell them?
- Safety – personal safety in an emergency situation
- Unconsciousness – checking for responsiveness, are they breathing?
- The Recovery Position
- Bleeding – including nosebleeds
- Bumps, Bruises & Suspected Broken Bones
- Burns
- Poisonings
- Bites and Stings -Bee Sting Allergies etc
- Fainting
- Breathing Difficulties – e. g Asthma
- Epilepsy and Seizures
- Falls from Height – not moving an injured person
Included for each Child
- A coloured magnetic page to stick on the fridge – to be completed by the parents with emergency contacts, address, allergies etc.
- A whirly word (word search) puzzle)
- A colouring – in page
- A pair of gloves – sizes small
- A small syringe filled with the red jelly as a treat (OPTIONAL)
- A certificate of participation in the Band Aid Basic First Aid Course
We also set – up a table display with a large variety of First Aid and Ambulance Equipment for the children to look at, touch and familiarize themselves with. It is important for the children to not be fearful of equipment which may be foreign to them.
Important to Know
- Band Aid Instructors are not only active emergency care personnel, but also parents.
- No real – life photographs of blood or injuries are shown, only drawings or cartoons.
